Two students from same village die after consuming poisonous substance in Basti

Lucknow: A 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old youth from the same village in the Harraiya area died on Sunday after allegedly consuming poisonous substances within a few hours of each other.Police said the circumstances that led to the suspected poison consumption were not immediately clear. Both bodies were sent for post-mortem examination and a detailed investigation has been initiated to establish the cause of death and the sequence of events.According to preliminary information, the two were students of the same inter college and were reportedly in a relationship. The girl allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at her home early Sunday, around 12.45 am. When her condition worsened, her family took her to the Community Health Centre in Kaptanganj. She died during treatment at the health facility, police said.After learning about the girl’s condition and that she had consumed poison, the youth also allegedly consumed a poisonous substance. His family rushed him to a hospital in Dubaulia, where doctors provided initial treatment. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to the district hospital. He died during treatment there.The two deaths, occurring within a short span, triggered panic and mourning in the village. There was speculation among villagers that the girl and the youth had spoken on the phone before the girl consumed the substance, and that an argument may have taken place. It was also being discussed locally that the youth consumed poison after hearing about the girl’s health condition. Police officials said these claims had not been verified.Harraiya circle officer Swarnima Singh said initial indications pointed to suspected poisoning in both cases, but the final determination would depend on post-mortem findings. She said investigators were verifying timelines, phone-related details and other circumstances leading up to the incident.
