Kolkata: Two passengers of a toto were killed and two others seriously injured after an SUV belonging to former Trinamool Congress MLA Sukumar Mahata from Sandeshkhali rammed into the e-rickshaw on Basanti Highway at Boyarmari near Nazat in North 24 Parganas on Wednesday afternoon. The SUV plunged into a pond following the collision, triggering tension in the area.According to local sources, Mahata was not in the vehicle at the time as he was on teaching duty at school.Mahata claimed that two totos were racing when his car collided with one of them. The impact sent the e-rickshaw flying, while the SUV veered off the road and plunged into a pond.Police from Nazat police station’s Rajbari outpost rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Minakhan Hospital for postmortem examinations, while the two injured passengers were reportedly being shifted to a hospital in Kolkata.BJP MLA Sanat Sardar from Sandeshkhali alleged that the accident occurred because the vehicle was travelling at high speed. Police are investigating the cause of the crash, including the possibility of a mechanical fault.
