Tripura records 13% decline in road traffic accidents: Min

Agartala: Tripura has recorded at least a 13% reduction in road traffic accidents even as the number of registered vehicles nearly doubled from about 4 lakh to 8 lakh within a year, transport minister Sushanta Chowdhury said on Wednesday.He said the state govt has rolled out multiple initiatives to improve road safety, strengthen emergency response and ensure accident victims receive timely medical care.At a workshop on the Motor Vehicles Act and the Good Samaritan policy, Chowdhury announced a reward of Rs 25,000 from the transport department for individuals who help injured road accident victims by taking them to hospitals.The programme provides immediate cashless medical treatment for accident victims, he said.Chowdhury stressed the need to tighten road safety measures and strengthen enforcement of traffic rules through better road safety strategy, traffic management and law enforcement practices. He also said those assisting accident victims under the PM Rahat scheme will not face police questioning or legal complications.He said 16 advanced life-saving ambulances and modern traffic interceptor vehicles have been deployed along key highways and in accident-prone zones to speed up emergency response.DGP Anurag said around 70,000 driving licences have been cancelled in Tripura over the past three years for traffic violations, with many others suspended temporarily.“The number of road traffic accidents in the state decreased from 578 incidents in 2024 to 527 in 2025,” Anurag stated, adding that police have adopted the four “Es” — education, enforcement, emergency care, and engineering — to improve road safety.The DGP said the Traffic Police, under the community policing programme ‘Prayas’, has launched a drive to provide free eye tests for commercial vehicle drivers. Those needing glasses or vision aids will receive lenses at no cost.
