Agartala: The Tripura high court has ordered the formation of an SIT to probe allegations of assault, corruption, misconduct, and biased investigation involving police personnel at the East Agartala Police Station, after finding apparent lapses in the initial investigation.The order came in response to a writ petition filed by Ratna Roy, a resident of Dhaleswar, who alleged that her family was assaulted and her son tortured in police custody following a dispute with municipal employees. The court observed that the allegations, coupled with the failure to register an FIR or conduct a fair inquiry, warranted an independent probe under senior supervision to ensure transparency and accountability.A division bench comprising Chief Justice MS Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit ordered that the case be investigated by an SIT led by a DSP, with officials from the police crime branch, under the supervision of an IGP.According to the petition, Ratna Roy was engaged in construction work at her property when two employees of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) — identified as Rabindranath Ghosh and Joy Debnath — allegedly disrupted the work repeatedly and demanded an illicit payment of Rs 2 lakh, threatening to halt construction if their demand was not met.The situation escalated on April 4, when Ghosh, Debnath, and others reportedly arrived at the family’s rented home at around 10:45pm, summoned Roy’s son Saikat Saha outside, and physically assaulted him. When Ratna Roy and her husband tried to intervene, they were allegedly assaulted as well.The petition claims that Saikat was forcibly taken to East Agartala Police Station, where he was subjected to physical abuse in the presence of police personnel. The allegations include humiliation, torture, inappropriate physical contact, and attempts at disrobing.Roy said she filed a complaint on April 6, naming the accused people. However, no FIR was registered, nor was any effective investigation initiated. After receiving any response from senior officials, including the SP of West Tripura and the DGP, she approached the HC on April 29 seeking judicial intervention.
