Dibrugarh: Three prisoners, including a man convicted of murdering his wife and her parents in 2023, escaped from Swahid Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital in Golaghat early Saturday, prompting a district-wide manhunt.Police said Nazibur Rahman Bora (28), Rupam Kalita (31) and Ajoy Gowala (34) fled at 5.14am after allegedly obtaining keys left unattended by a home guard. Bora, a mechanical engineer, was under treatment at the hospital along with Kalita and Gowala, who were arrested in separate theft cases.The prisoners were being held in a cabin for undertrial patients secured by two iron gates. Three home guards were assigned to guard them, but only two were on duty, police said.

Home guard Dipu Saikia said fellow guard Biren Borah left the cabin just before 5am after waking him and handing over the keys of the handcuffs and iron gates to him. “He told me he was leaving and gave me the keys, which I kept under my pillow. I dozed off again and when I woke up sometime later, the prisoners were gone and both gates were wide open,” Saikia said.When Saikia checked under his pillow, he discovered that not only the cell and handcuff keys but his motorcycle keys and mobile phone were also missing. CCTV footage later confirmed that the trio fled the hospital premises on Saikia’s motorcycle.Golaghat SSP Rajen Singh admitted serious lapses on the part of the guards. “There has been a heavy lapse on the part of the guards deployed to secure these prisoners,” he said, adding that search operations were underway to trace the fugitives.Bora is accused in a July 24, 2023, case in which his wife, Sanghamitra, and her parents, Sanjeev and Junu Ghosh, were hacked to death in Golaghat. Police said Bora later surrendered with the couple’s nine-month-old child. The case drew statewide attention, with CM Himanta Biswa Sarma visiting the victims’ family and assuring them of justice.
