Chandigarh: Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM), an umbrella body of city traders, has opposed the proposed creation of new vending zones, claiming the move would worsen traffic congestion, sanitation issues and business conditions in existing markets.In a representation submitted to the home-cum-local bodies secretary of the Chandigarh administration, the traders urged the administration not to approve 11 new vending zones proposed by the municipal corporation and currently awaiting clearance from the chief architect. They pointed out that the town vending committee (TVC) had earlier decided against creating additional vending zones.CBM members said most city markets were already grappling with congestion, inadequate parking and sanitation challenges.

They argued that setting up new vending sites within market areas would further strain infrastructure and inconvenience visitors.“We, on behalf of the traders of the city, submit that markets are already congested, parking space is limited and sanitation issues persist. A large number of existing vendors have already been rehabilitated in mini-booth markets without adequate parking or public conveniences. Therefore, we strongly oppose the creation of additional vendor zones in already congested markets,” the representation stated.The traders also noted that the MC had recently allotted sites to vendors through a draw of lots and recommended 11 new vending zones, most of them within market areas.“Most of these sites are likely to add to congestion and create problems for traders as well as inconvenience visitors. We request the administration to direct the MC to shift vendors to the already allotted sites at the earliest and refrain from creating new vending zones within markets,” the representation added.
