Mumbai: A 34-year-labourer engaged by the BMC to clean streets was killed in a freak accident in Wadala after a metal ring from the tyre of a moving towing van burst and the hubcap flew off and struck him in the neck, said the police.The deceased, identified as Shailu Maruti, was an orphan.According to the complaint filed by a constable from RAK Marg police station, the incident occurred on May 2, around 4.26 pm on RAK Road near Shaheen Darbar Hotel, close to National Market.The constable rushed to the spot after receiving a wireless message about the accident. Upon arrival, beat marshal officer Chougule informed him that the accident involved a towing van.The vehicle was being driven by Mohammad Farooq Sheikh, who was reportedly towing an illegally parked vehicle at the time. During the process, the metal hubcap of the rear left tyre of the van allegedly detached and flew off with force, striking Maruti in the neck. The impact caused severe injuries, and the victim collapsed on the spot. He was rushed by co-workers to KEM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead before admission.
