Kolkata: A freak accident claimed the life of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl on Sunday morning after she fell into an open underground water reservoir located inside the compound of an under-construction building in New Town.The victim, Ankita Das, was the daughter of a caretaker at a nearby residential building. According to cops, the toddler had gone to play with the other children of the workers and caretakers at the adjoining under-construction site, a routine she followed almost every day.Investigators revealed that around 11 am, the wife of the under-construction building’s caretaker requested Ankita’s mother to take her home. However, because the mother was occupied with her daily household chores, there was an unfortunate delay. A short while later, the victim’s mother sent her elder son to fetch his little sister.Upon reaching the construction site, the brother could not find Ankita anywhere. After searching the premises for some time, he tragically spotted his sister’s body floating inside the reservoir The family immediately pulled the child out and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate stated that the family did not initially report the incident to the cops. The local police were only alerted by hospital officials after the toddler’s body was brought in. The New Town police station has initiated an unnatural death case, and an investigation is underway to determine if there was criminal negligence regarding the open reservoir.
