Hailakandi: A 35-year-old tipper driver was electrocuted at a petrol pump in Hailakandi town on Thursday, triggering allegations of safety negligence.The deceased was identified as Didar Hossain Sheikh.Sources said Didar raised the tipper’s hydraulic trailer after refuelling. The trailer touched a high-tension power line passing above the petrol pump premises, giving him a severe electric shock.Didar was thrown to the ground while trying to exit the vehicle. His brother briefly came into contact with the electric current while attempting to help him but escaped unhurt.Didar was taken to Algapur Hospital in critical condition and later shifted to SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.Algapur-Kanchanpur Zila Parishad member Aftab Uddin alleged negligence by the petrol pump management and the electricity department. “Insulated and safe cabling should have been mandated and installed within commercial petrol pump premises. Instead, exposed and low-hanging live wires were allowed directly over a high-vehicle fueling area,” he said.Police registered a case, sent the body for an autopsy and launched an investigation into possible safety lapses and criminal negligence.Didar is survived by his wife, son and daughter. Residents demanded action against those responsible for the electrical hazards.
