Ahmedabad: Three Gujarat hospitals were bestowed honours at the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day celebrations in New Delhi by NOTTO under the ministry of health and family welfare (MOHFW).While IKDRC received the award for excellence in leading govt hospital in organ transplantation, Civil Hospital received one for best non-transplant organ retrieval centre. New Civil Hospital in Surat was awarded for the best stem death team.State health department officials said that in 2025, a total of 597 organ transplants were performed at IKDRC, including 502 kidney transplants, 86 liver transplants and nine pancreas transplants. Of these, 380 procedures were done free of cost under PM-JAY, they added. About 34% of the patients were from outside the state.Medical experts lauded the role of NGOs in creating awareness and convincing relatives of brain-dead patients to donate organs. They added that each organ donated reduces the burden of living organ donation for chronic kidney and liver diseases.
