Chennai: For nearly three months, residents of Thirumullaivoyal have been navigating slushy roads after stormwater drain and road-relaying works left several internal stretches dug up and unfinished. With frequent spells of rain over the past two weeks, these roads have made daily commute difficult, increasing the risk of accidents.In localities such as Manikandan Nagar, Manikandapuram, Kalaignar Nagar and Balaji Nagar, roads remain unmotorable, forcing nearly 2,000 residents to wade through muddy stretches to reach the nearest main road, nearly 1.5 km away. Residents said stagnant water, loose mud and deep potholes have made the roads dangerous , particularly for two-wheeler riders.The situation has worsened after recent rains, with residents claiming motorists skid and fall on the roads every day. They said many of those affected are parents travelling to pick up their children from nearby schools. The poor condition of the roads has also led to damage to vehicles and disrupted access for emergency services.Following this issue, residents protested two weeks back on CTH Road, demanding that Avadi corporation complete the pending road restoration works. However, they said that no action has been taken so far despite repeated complaints.S Prashanth, a resident, said, “Every weekend I visit my parents who live here. When the corporation began digging the roads, officials told us they would be relaid within two weeks. It has now been three months, and they no longer respond to our calls. Many senior citizens live here, and the condition is becoming dangerous.”K Murali Krishnan, a member of the SMART Association, Thirumullaivoyal, said, “Hospital Road has become so narrow due to the ongoing works that even ambulances cannot enter, while water tankers are forced to remain on the periphery of the street; there is no regular work happening and no inspection by officials. The restoration should be completed immediately,” he said.Responding to complaints, a senior Avadi Corporation official said repair works have begun. A ₹2-crore project has been sanctioned to relay damaged roads, including those in Manikandapuram and stretches of Chozhambedu Main Road. The official said restoration of Chozhambedu Main Road is expected to commence at the earliest.
