New Delhi: Three schoolchildren fell into an overflowing drain amid severe waterlogging in north Delhi’s Jagatpur on Thursday. They were immediately rescued by locals.CCTV footage of the incident, which shows the children in school uniform, later surfaced on social media. The 41-second clip, dated Aug 6 and timestamped around 12.47 pm, shows a road completely submerged under rainwater, with nearly 10 schoolchildren wading through water reaching up to their calves. Several vehicles can also be seen stranded on the flooded stretch, indicating traffic congestion caused by the waterlogging. As the children continue walking, three of them suddenly disappear into what is reportedly an overflowing drain concealed beneath the accumulated rainwater. Panic breaks out among the group as the other children rush back, while a girl is seen screaming and warning those behind her about the hidden danger.Within seconds, residents, passersby and drivers of nearby vehicles rush to the spot and pull the children to safety. As more people gather, some residents are seen recording the incident, while others search the flooded stretch to ensure that no other child had fallen into the drain.A senior police officer said, “The three children were rescued by members of the public. No PCR call or formal complaint was received.”Multiple deaths related to waterlogging have taken place in recent years in Delhi-NCR.Last month, a seven-year-old boy drowned in a waterlogged vacant plot in outer Delhi’s Samaypur Badli. A few days later, a three-year-old girl drowned in rainwater that collected outside her home in Ghaziabad. In 2024, two boys, aged 12 and 14, drowned near the heavily waterlogged Siraspur underpass after the area was inundated following heavy rain.
