Theft accused in custody dies during treatment at NMMC hosp

Navi Mumbai: A 38-year-old man arrested in a theft case by Navi Mumbai International Airport police died early Thursday morning while in police custody at the NRI Coastal police station’s lockup. The deceased was identified as Sanjay Kantu Yadav, a resident of Ulwe, who hails from Uttar Pradesh.ACP (crime) Bhausaheb Dhole said that late in the night on Oct 7 (Wednesday), the accused Yadav suddenly suffered from a health issue as he started flexing his limbs by holding his fists firmly, resembling seizure-like symptoms, and fell unconscious.As this was noticed by the lockup guard, he alerted the on-duty prison officer, the officer said. Yadav was rushed to NMMC’s Meenatai Thackeray hospital, Nerul, where he was admitted at 12.50 am on Oct 8 (Thursday). He succumbed during treatment as the on-duty medical officer declared him dead at 1.34 am.ACP Dhole said, “Prior to arresting Yadav on Oct 4 in the theft case, his medical examination was conducted at Panvel sub-district hospital. While he was being produced before the Panvel JMFC court for seeking his police custody remand, the accused Yadav had not disclosed any health complaint. He did not even disclose his past medical history during the medical examination. The court had remanded him to police custody till Oct 6 and then extended it till Oct 8. Hence, he was lodged in the lockup at NRI Coastal police station.”Dr Vilas Bhalerao, medical superintendent at NMMC hospital, Nerul said, “The patient Sanjay Yadav succumbed during treatment. As it is a medico-legal case, Yadav’s body has been sent to JJ hospital, Mumbai, for conducting a post-mortem, and the autopsy report is awaited to ascertain cause of death.”
