Noida: Poor water quality, contamination and sewer overflow in many sectors are posing a recurring health hazard, say residents.Residents complained about muddy and stinking water on Tuesday and called for immediate action from Noida Authority. The complaints primarily related to the supply of dirty water in Sector 12 and sewer backflow in sectors 46 and 21.The president of Plot Owners RWA, Sector 12, Tarsem Chandra, expressing concern over highly contaminated and yellow-coloured water, urged the water department to investigate the source of the contamination. He also demanded a report of the total dissolved solids (TDS) for the past six months.In a related complaint, a resident of Sector 82, Lata Verma, said that water testing conducted at ITS lab showed TDS levels at 1,612 mg/L, significantly exceeding the acceptable limit of 500 mg/L. Verma also emphasised that other issues, such as water hardness, have also not been addressed.Meanwhile, general secretary of the RWA in Sector 47, Sanjay Chauhan, said scarce supply and dirty water were not their only problems. Sewers in the area are also overflowing. This problem has been reported in Sector 46 too.Sector 46 RWA’s general secretary, Sanjay Kumar Awana, wrote a letter to the general manager (water and sewer department) of the Authority, complaining about the unsanitary conditions resulting from blockages. He demanded inspections of the sewer network and cleaning of choked lines with a fixed timeline for completion of the work.“This is a serious sanitation and public health emergency requiring immediate intervention. However, despite numerous complaints, nothing has happened,” said Awana. Residents fear that the stagnant sewage water could lead to mosquito breeding, especially during heavy rain.A resident of Sector 21, Umesh Batra, also said that R Block of the sector has been facing persistent sewer backflow from the main line. “It has become difficult for people to go out,” he added.Noida Authority officials claimed that water quality checks are conducted regularly and the complaints raised will be investigated.
