Hyderabad: Telangana Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) chairman N Satyanarayana on Tuesday resigned from his post nearly two years before completing his five-year tenure, citing health issues.With his resignation, the state govt is expected to initiate the process of appointing a new chairman through a search committee. Sources said chief secretary K Rama Krishna Rao and former chief secretary Shanti Kumari are among the names being considered for the post.Rama Krishna Rao’s extension as chief secretary ends in June, and he may be considered if no further extension is granted. Shanti Kumari, currently serving as director general of the MCRHRD Institute after retirement, is also being discussed. Former IAS officer T Chiranjeevulu, now active in the BC movement and president of the BC Intellectual Forum, is reportedly reluctant to accept the post despite having applied earlier.Satyanarayana, the first full-time chairman of Telangana RERA, said persistent back pain and medical advice from family members and doctors prompted his decision.“Though my innate urge for academic and administrative excellence does not deter me from work, I have to obey my body alerts, the advice of my family member-doctors and professional medical advice. I requested the govt to accept my resignation considering my health conditions, and the state govt has accepted it,” Satyanarayana told TOI.Though Telangana RERA was established in 2017, the authority did not have a full-time chairman until 2023, when Satyanarayana took charge.“When the previous govt invited applications for the chairman’s post, nearly 80 people, including retired and serving IAS officers, applied. Former chief secretaries SK Joshi and Somesh Kumar also applied for the post. Some officers in service were even willing to take voluntary retirement as the post carries a five-year tenure or till 65 years of age,” a senior municipal administration department official said.During his tenure, Satyanarayana introduced several reforms to streamline RERA operations and project registrations. He imposed penalties on violators, acted against pre-launch offers and focused on protecting homebuyers’ interests.RERA officials said he also cleared a large backlog of complaints pending since 2017, disposing of 1,764 cases after assuming charge.
