Hyderabad: Telangana ranked third among states nationally and first among southern states in GST revenue growth during the first seven months of 2026-27, recording a 13.8% increase over the corresponding period last year, with VAT and professional tax collections excluded from the calculation.According to the latest state-wise GST data, only Assam and Uttar Pradesh recorded higher growth than Telangana during the April-Oct period. Assam registered 38.3% growth, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 15.5%. Gujarat, Karnataka and Kerala followed Telangana with growth of 12.5%, 12.2% and 12.1%, respectively.Andhra Pradesh recorded growth of just 3.1%, while Tamil Nadu was the only southern state to report a decline, with GST collections contracting 2.3%.The figures cover domestic GST collections, including CGST, SGST and IGST, and exclude GST on imports. Cumulative growth across states stood at 7.4%, placing Telangana well above the national average for the period.Telangana’s Oct performance was relatively moderate compared with its cumulative growth. The state recorded 14% growth during the month, placing it fourth among southern states. Andhra Pradesh led the region with 24%, followed by Kerala at 23% and Karnataka at 18%. Tamil Nadu registered 3% growth.Nationally, Oct’s performance was uneven. Assam recorded 47% growth, followed by Manipur at 40%, Meghalaya at 35% and Jharkhand at 31%. Telangana’s monthly growth was also lower than that of several other states, including Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, which recorded 25% and 24%, respectively. The difference between monthly and cumulative growth will be important to watch in the coming months, particularly amid concerns over rainfall deficiency and El Nino and their possible impact on economic activity and consumption. GST collections reflect activity across sectors, and any sustained moderation in trade and spending could influence the state’s revenue performance in subsequent months.
