Hyderabad: Telangana’s famed Tandur Red Gram, which became the first agricultural product from Telangana to get the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2022, is now all set to get traceability as Telangana govt moves to protect the GI-tagged product’s identity, prevent counterfeit sales and help farmers earn higher market value for their produce. The traceability project will map farm plots and verify them against the registered GI area in Tandur, ensuring that only produce grown by registered farmers within the approved region carries verified Tandur origin. The project will cover about 65,000 farmers cultivating Tandur Red Gram in the designated region and will involve creating digital profiles for each farmer, linking identity details with land, crop and harvest records, and building a platform to track the produce from farm plots through aggregation, processing and distribution. The Telangana agriculture department has awarded the project to Hyderabad-based supply-chain traceability and digital public infrastructure company TRST01. The company said it has received the notification of award under the NeGPA 2025-26 scheme.TRST01 founder and CEO Prabir Mishra said the effort would make the GI identity visible and verifiable across the value chain while connecting farmers, origin, quality and markets. Also known as Tandur Toor Dal, the product received a GI tag in December 2022. The GI, registered as No 706, is held by Yalal Farmers Producers Company Ltd, which applied with support from Prof Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University.Tandur Red Gram is grown in rainfed black soils in Telangana’s Vikarabad district, where limestone and attapulgite clay contribute to its taste, cooking quality and 22-24% protein content.
