Techie loses Rs 1.3 crore in matrimonial scam in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A 36-year-old software engineer from Kondapur was duped of Rs 1.3 crore by a man posing as a prospective groom on a matrimonial platform, promising marriage while repeatedly extracting money on false pretexts. Police registered a case following her complaint.The techie created her profile on matrimonial app on April 10, 2023, and came in contact with the accused on Dec 20. Introducing himself as Kolikapudy Nagendrababu alias Surya Parvathaneni, he claimed to be a Bengaluru-based businessman and said his parents were deceased. After frequent conversations in Telugu, he gained her trust without meeting her initially.She first transferred Rs 2 lakh on Dec 27 and later met him briefly near the Gachibowli ORR entrance. “He kept citing emergencies like accidents, illness, deaths and business losses, and assured he would marry me once things settled,” she told police.Over time, she exhausted her Rs 50 lakh savings and raised additional funds through loans, credit cards and loan apps. “In total, I gave him around Rs 1.3 crore. He paid interest initially, then stopped and cut off contact,” she said.She later discovered that the accused was already married with three children and had allegedly cheated multiple women. Police booked him under IPC Section 420 and IT Act Section 66-D. Officials said he is a repeat offender recently arrested in a similar case and will be taken into custody for questioning. Police urged citizens to verify identities on matrimonial platforms and avoid sending money to strangers online.
