Surat: A 26-year-old labourer from Bihar, allegedly on the run after murdering his father in Samastipur district in July, was arrested by Saroli police in Surat. Investigators said a family dispute over money preceded the killing.Shivshankar Sahani, who worked as a labourer in the transport sector, is accused of murdering his father, Raghuvir Sahani, on the night of July 26 while he was sleeping outside their home in a village under the Halai police station limits in Bihar’s Samastipur district.According to police, Sahani regularly sent money home to support his parents. His wife, Manisha Devi, lived with his parents and younger brother in their village.“In July this year, he could not earn enough to send money to his parents. This was due to heavy rains and flooding in Surat. After this, his father would frequently quarrel with Shivshankar and his his wife,, taunt her over him him not sending money. AfterAfter this, he decided to kill his father,” a Surat police official said.After one such quarrel, Sahani boarded a train to Bihar on July 24. On reaching his village on July 26, he hid on a farm and later entered the house with an axe after villagers had gone to sleep. He is accused of attacking his father with the weapon before fleeing.After the murder, Sahani’s mother, Ramkali Devi, lodged a police complaint naming her son and daughter-in-law as suspects.As Bihar police began searching for him, Sahani moved between several states to evade arrest.“Sahani first came to Surat after the murder. As he could not find work, he went to Delhi and started working there. As Bihar police traced him to Delhi, he left and spent 10 days on various trains to evade arrest. Twenty days ago, he returned to Surat and started working for a transport firm. Based on human intelligence, we nabbed him and handed him over to Bihar police,” said Saroli police inspector S R Vekariya.Police said the brutality of Raghuvir Sahani’s killing fuelled fears that Shivshankar could also target his mother, who had earlier quarrelled with him and his wife. Amid rumours that he was still hiding near the village, Ramkali Devi sought police protection and was subsequently provided security.
