Silchar: SUCI (Communist) held a demonstration in Silchar on Friday, highlighting the poor condition of roads and persistent waterlogging and demanded immediate repairs and a permanent solution to what it called the town’s recurring artificial flood crisis. The protest was held near the Khudiram Bose statue in Club Road area. Party workers carrying placards urged the govt to reconstruct damaged roads instead of relying on temporary patchwork and to improve the city’s drainage system to prevent flooding during the monsoon.Party leaders alleged that the condition of Silchar’s roads has steadily worsened despite repair work carried out after public protests around 18 months ago. They said several stretches are again riddled with potholes, while recent patchwork has proved inadequate, forcing commuters to navigate damaged roads daily. They also alleged that poor maintenance of drains and canals has aggravated the city’s drainage crisis, causing widespread waterlogging even after moderate rainfall. Speakers said renovation work on Rangirkhal is progressing slowly and that no comprehensive measures have been taken to restore other drainage channels, resulting in repeated instances of artificial flooding in several parts of the town. The party claimed to have collected more than 2,000 signatures from residents over the past 10 days in support of its campaign, saying the response reflected growing public concern over Silchar’s deteriorating civic infrastructure. After the demonstration, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the Cachar district commissioner, demanding time-bound reconstruction of damaged roads and a comprehensive drainage improvement plan to address chronic waterlogging.
