Jaipur: Protests over restoration of student union elections and campus-related issues were held at Rajasthan University Wednesday, with student representative Sanjeev Gurjar and the protesters he led being detained and the NSUI unit staging a separate demonstration at Commerce College.During the demonstration, the protesters took out a symbolic funeral procession of Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa, following which police detained Gurjar and his supporters.Gurjar said students’ voices cannot be suppressed and announced that students would gherao Rajasthan Assembly on Aug 20 as part of their campaign for restoration of student union elections.Rajasthan University NSUI unit held a protest at Commerce College under the “Parisaar Ki Pukar” campaign, submitting a 10-point memorandum to the college principal related to students’ academic and basic facilities.The demands included restoration of student union elections, making 75% attendance mandatory and introducing a biometric attendance system for students and teachers, an e-Mitra facility on campus, regular cleaning, a student helpline number and repair of dilapidated classrooms.NSUI also demanded that the newly constructed BBA-BCA building be opened in the current academic session and that the physical education department be regularly maintained, with faulty equipment replaced and required equipment made available.NSUI unit president Manish Meghvanshi said the “Parisaar Ki Pukar” campaign would continue and the agitation would be expanded if the demands were not addressed within a stipulated timeframe.
