Student cadet dies after fall from hostel's 3rd floor in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai: A 19-year-old pre-sea cadet identified as Somnath Singh Shivam, a student pursuing first-year BSc Nautical Science at TS Chanakya campus of Indian Maritime University in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, tragically died on Thursday, allegedly after falling from the halfway window of the third floor of the hostel building on the campus. Singh was found lying unconscious, severely injured and bleeding on the ground floor around 5 am after being spotted by other students in the adjacent wing of the hostel. Singh was rushed in an ambulance to Dr DY Patil Hospital, Nerul, where he succumbed to his severe injuries during treatment around 8 am, police informed. An accidental death report (ADR) was registered.A police officer informed that the deceased student hails from Bihar. “He was residing in the university’s TS Chanakya campus hostel’s third-floor room, sharing it with another student. It is being further probed whether he committed suicide by jumping from the third floor, since we found Singh’s notebook in his hostel room. He wrote some sentences indicating that he was frustrated and under mental stress. But he did not write anywhere that he was committing suicide or anyone was harassing him.”According to police, Singh’s room partner claimed that as exams were going on, they both studied till 3 am, after which he went to sleep. He was shocked after Singh’s body was found injured and bleeding on the ground floor near the hostel building in the morning. “All possible angles are being probed to ascertain whether Singh committed suicide under exam stress or accidentally fell from the third floor. Hence, for the probe, we seized Singh’s laptop, mobile phone and the notebook. Even his mobile call data records will be obtained to find out with whom all he communicated before the incident.”
