State must prioritise fin obligations: HC

HYDERABAD: The Telangana high court on Wednesday raised concerns over the govt’s financial priorities while hearing a petition challenging the constitutional validity of the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes.Justice NV Shravan Kumar observed that while courts cannot interfere in policy decisions, the govt must ensure proper prioritisation of public expenditure. The judge noted that the state often cites financial constraints in cases involving compensation, contractor payments, municipal dues and employee benefits, even as public lands are being sold off.“If the state has excess money, it can distribute it, but it must first prioritise primary financial obligations,” the judge remarked and directed the state to file counter-affidavits within four weeks, adjourning the matter to Aug 5 for further hearing.
