State board sets 33% pass mark for Class 12 from 2027

Guwahati: From 2027, the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) will set 33 as the pass mark in every subject for the Class 12 state board examination, aligning it with CBSE.“Earlier there was an ambiguity over pass marks. In some subjects it was 36, in some subjects it was 30. But now it has been made uniform at 33% in all subjects. Like in CBSE, this new system will be there for Class 12 state boards next year,” said ASSEB chairperson RC Jain.ASSEB will also allow students to take a betterment exam, or reappear if they fail in one or two subjects, within two months of the results, without losing an academic year.“In 2027 state board examination, all students will be regular students. Those who failed in one or two subjects do not need to take readmission but will be able to appear as regular candidates in 2027 itself. If they want to appear in more subjects to improve overall performance, that will also be allowed. There was no such provision earlier,” Jain said.Students who fail in more than two subjects will have to take readmission, Jain said, citing frequent changes in curriculum and textbooks.A portal for readmission will be opened within the next two weeks, Jain said, adding that students will have flexibility to change institutions.ASSEB vice-chairman Rukma Gohain Baruah said the vocational stream will be withdrawn from next year, leaving arts, commerce and science streams. He said from 2027, students choosing even one science subject will be treated as science students.“As per NEP, we have opened the bars,” he said, adding that one skill subject will be mandatory for arts students.
