New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will hold elections for chairperson and deputy chairperson of its standing committee on July 27, following the completion of process to fill vacancies created by the retirement of half of the committee’s members on July 15.“Under section 47(1) of Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, the Standing Committee is required to elect one of its councillor members as chairperson and another member as deputy chairperson at its first meeting each year. Nomination forms will be available at municipal secretary on working days, with July 21 as the last date for filing nominations,” stated MCD circular issued Friday. Candidates are allowed to withdraw their candidature at any time before the election process begins. After the completion of the election for the remaining six seats on July 15, the committee now comprises 12 BJP members and six AAP members, giving BJP a comfortable majority to elect its candidate as standing committee chairperson. The last meeting of the committee took place on March 31, when nine out of 18 members retired through a draw of lots — a mandatory exercise undertaken after the committee’s formation. Since then, elections to fill the vacant positions have been pending, leaving the committee without the required strength to convene meetings and give financial nods to major projects.Under the normal process, the election of a new mayor at the beginning of each financial year is followed by the election of three standing committee members from the House. But after Dec 2022 elections, uncertainty surrounded the committee’s constitution process. It was not made for nearly two years because of political deadlock until elections were eventually held in June 2025, enabling the committee’s formation.
