Pune: The food licence of Sri Swami Samarth Bhojanalaya and Catering Services, which operates the refectory at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), was suspended on Tuesday following an inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official on Monday.Abhishek Shelkar, an SPPU student, said the students who used to have their meals at the refectory were diverted to other messes in the campus. According to the order issued by FDA on Tuesday, the inspection found several violations, including improper food storage and temperature control, inadequate pest-control measures, unhygienic food handling practices, poor segregation of raw and cooked food, absence of water quality records, and non-availability of employees’ medical examination records.Students have been complaining for long that the SPPU administration was turning a blind eye to the concerns raised. They were demanding action against the contractor as also dissolution of the existing food quality control committee and formation of a new one. The students had threatened to launch a mass email campaign to the FDA from Wednesday if their requests were not met. There are around eight messes and one refectory on the SPPU campus.
