Gurgaon: The Haryana higher education department’s plan to expand Vita milk booths across colleges and universities is facing hiccups due to space constraints in several districts.Officials said institutions operating from makeshift buildings in districts such as Gurgaon, Karnal, Sonipat, Hisar and Ambala may face difficulty in allocating space for the booths. Similar constraints have been flagged in Rewari, Kaithal and Yamunanagar. The initiative, aimed at improving access to affordable dairy products for students, follows a meeting held in Feb 2026 to expand the presence of outlets run by the Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd on educational campuses. The groundwork began in June 2025, when the department identified govt and aided colleges for setting up these booths. In April 2026, institutions were directed to identify suitable sites and submit proposals. Around 44 colleges across the state are currently functioning from makeshift buildings, making it difficult for them to find space for the booths. Some colleges, including Govt College Faridabad and SD College Ambala, already have operational booths, while many others have formally consented to join the network. However, officials said, some colleges have declined the proposal. Institutions such as Govt College Ambala Cantt and Govt College Ratia said they already had canteens, while some rural colleges said they did not have enough students to make the project viable.
