SP neta detained in land dispute case; city president absconding

Gorakhpur: Police detained Samajwadi Party member Jafar Amin alias Dakku in connection with a land possession dispute in Rajghat’s Khokhar Tola area after a video of the incident, showing women being assaulted and abused, went viral on social media on Tuesday evening. Also named in the case, SP city president Shabbir Qureshi is absconding, police said.According to police, Dakku and his associates arrived at the disputed plot in a pickup vehicle and attempted to remove a tin shed and pipes installed there. Women at the site opposed the move, leading to a heated argument and scuffle between the two sides. The incident was recorded by bystanders and the video later surfaced online.Taking cognisance of the viral clip, Rajghat police launched an investigation and conducted overnight raids at several locations. Based on a complaint filed by Shahana Khatoon, FIR was registered against Jafar Amin alias Dakku, Shabbir Qureshi and about 10 unidentified persons under relevant sections.City SP Nimish Patil said prime accused Jafar Amin was taken into custody. Four police teams were formed to arrest the remaining accused, while raids are underway.Dakku claimed the disputed land belongs to him and that he possesses valid ownership documents. He alleged that some people had occupied a portion of the plot illegally by dumping soil and using it for other purposes, prompting him to visit the site to remove the encroachment.The opposite side, represented by Ayesha Khatoon, alleged the land is govt property and efforts were being made to secure its registration through improper means. She also accused local authorities of aiding attempts to grab the land.Police said the situation remains under control and further legal action is being taken.
