Snehasish Chakraborty faces probe over Rs 1 crore loan ‘irregularities’

Kolkata: Former state minister and Democratic Trinamool Congress member Snehasish Chakraborty has come under the scanner over allegations that he improperly secured loans totalling around Rs 1 crore from an agricultural cooperative in Hooghly by using his influence as its chairman. The Institutional Corruption Prevention Commission, headed by retired Justice Biswajit Basu, on Wednesday launched a probe into the alleged irregularities at Singti Guti Atara Bilaspur Agricultural Cooperative Society. Officials raided its Jangipara office and seized key documents, while transaction records are being examined.Beliaghata TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh had alleged that Chakraborty took Rs 85 lakh from the cooperative and another Rs 10 lakh was routed to a female relative.Chakraborty denied the allegations, calling them an attempt at character assassination. “I am a member of Singti Agricultural Cooperative Society… I am not the chairman as is being propagated. I never have been,” he said, adding that he had repaid all loans. The commission is examining the allegations and transactions.
