Jaipur: Doctors at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital successfully performed two rare and complex surgeries, underscoring the advanced surgical capabilities of the hospital’s General Surgery Dept.In one case, surgeons removed 15 benign lumps from the breasts of an 18-year-old woman from Tonk district. Seven lumps were removed from one breast and eight from the other through small incisions. Doctors said breast lumps are usually few in number, making the case highly unusual. The patient ignored the lumps for a long time before seeking treatment, fearing they could be cancerous. After detailed examinations, doctors confirmed that all the lumps were benign.“The surgery was recommended because of the unusually high number of lumps and the risk of future complications. The patient has recovered well and is stable,” Surgeon Dr Mohit Jain said.Dr Richa Jain said most breast lumps are non-cancerous but stressed the importance of early diagnosis. “The General Surgery Dept will soon launch a dedicated Breast Screening OPD to provide expert consultation for women with breast lumps, pain, swelling and other related conditions,” she said.In another rare case, doctors treated a woman from Sikar suffering from persistent abdominal pain. Investigations revealed a right-sided diaphragmatic hernia with a 6×5 cm defect, through which the right kidney, transverse colon and part of the liver shifted into the chest cavity.Dr Amit Jain performed an advanced laparoscopic procedure to reposition the displaced organs and repair the diaphragmatic defect using surgical mesh. Doctors said a delay in treatment could have resulted in intestinal strangulation, bowel perforation, severe infection, respiratory distress or even death.
