Chennai: Along with large data centres, deploying small data centres will be crucial to bridge the AI divide across the country, IIT Madras director V Kamakoti said here on Thursday.Launching a conclave on AI governance at the campus, Kamakoti said large data centres, which need more electricity and cooling systems, are not necessary to infer from large language models.“We will need large language models to train AI models. But small data centres or pico-clouds are enough to use the models. We will become a country which uses AI responsibly, ensuring that AI will not have an adverse impact on energy and other natural resources of our country,” he said.IIT-M is planning to release 500 videos on how AI is making India better and how technology can improve quality of life. “The Centre for Responsible AI at IIT-M is partnering with Better India to produce these videos. Each will explore a different sector, such as agriculture, space, legal and manufacturing,” he said.On a query about AI’s impact on jobs, professor B Ravindran, head of Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI and Centre for Responsible AI (CeRI), IIT-M, said that AI need not replace all jobs. “A job is composed of different kind of skills and AI is not uniformly good at replacing every one of them. Each job will have to be reimagined with the impact of AI,” he said.
