Kalyan: Nearly six months after gold ornaments worth Rs 5.4 crore were stolen from the moving Siddheshwar Express, the Crime Branch unit of the Government Railway Police (GRP) cracked the case, arrested four members of an alleged interstate theft gang and recovered gold worth Rs 1.62 crore.The theft came to light in Dec 2025 when Mumbai-based gold traders Abhaykumar Madanlal Jain (52) and his daughter Tanishka returned to Mumbai from Solapur after conducting business with local jewellers. The duo travelled with gold ornaments weighing over 4.7 kg, stored in trolley bags placed beneath their seats in the AC coach of the Siddheshwar Express.Police said the duo spent two days visiting jewellery shops in Solapur, where they sold part of their collection. The remaining ornaments, including 17 pieces of jewellery weighing more than 4.4 kg and a gold ring weighing 125 grams, were transported back to Mumbai.The bags were secured with chains and locks before the passengers went to sleep. However, when they woke up the next morning, both trolley bags vanished. By then, the train reached Kalyan, where the victims approached the Kalyan GRP and lodged a complaint.On instructions of GRP Commissioner Rakesh Kalasagar, a special Crime Branch team led by Senior Police Inspector Vijay Khedkar launched an investigation.Officers scrutinised CCTV footage from railway stations along the Solapur-Kalyan route and developed intelligence inputs that led them to a gang operating in Solapur district. After months of surveillance and raids across several villages, police arrested four accused and recovered three gold biscuits weighing nearly 1.1 kg. Investigators said the stolen ornaments were melted and converted into gold bars to conceal their origin. The recovered gold was valued at Rs 1.62 crore.Police said six accused were still absconding, and efforts were underway to trace them and recover the remaining stolen property. The investigation was continuing.
