SIR-deleted citizens watch neighbours vote | Kolkata News

Kolkata: “Even if my name is restored in the electoral roll later, shall I remain alive to cast my vote next time?” asked septuagenarian cancer survivor Rita Bhattacharjee, a resident of Genexx Valley in Joka, whose name was struck off during SIR. Over 100 residents of the Joka complex could not cast their votes. “I could never imagine that such humiliation would be in store for me. My name was there in the 2002 list. I am disappointed ,” said Bhattacharjee.Runu Chakraborty, a professor at Jadavpur University, was confined at home at Diamond City South under Behala East, a condominium where around 50 residents lost their voting rights this time. “I’ve been voting since 1991 and this is the first time I could not go to the booth even when it’s at my doorstep,” Chakraborty said.Another elderly resident of the complex, Rama Som, also bore the brunt of the SIR cut.
