Shots fired as rival groups clash

Times News Network Ludhiana: Two groups of youngsters indulged in a violent clash in Sanjay Gandhi Colony, Tajpur Road on Sunday night, following an old rivalry. The accused pelted each other with stones and bricks, after which one group fired gunshots. Fortunately no one sustained any bullet injury but panic-stricken people ran for cover. Police said both groups indulged in a scuffle and vandalised vehicles earlier. An FIR was lodged at the time.A woman resident of Sanjay Gandhi Colony said she was standing outside her house when a group of youngsters gathered in the street and started pelting stones and bricks at a few youngsters. The youngster who was attacked also called his associates and started throwing bricks at the rivals.“Several residents, including children, who were out in the street, ran to save themselves. The scuffle did not stop with just stone pelting. Some of the miscreants also fired at least four to five rounds. While no one was hurt, residents were terrified,” said the woman.Inspector Gagandeep Singh, SHO at division number 7 police station said, “Police have identified two main accused, Sunil Grewal and Ashish, who are rivals. Both Sunil and Ashish live in Sanjay Gandhi Colony. Sometime ago, Ashish and Sunil had a fight over parking the garbage collecting cart of Ashish in the street. They vandalized several vehicles. Though nobody filed a police complaint, police still registered a case against Sunil, Ashish and their aides.“In Sunday night’s incident, police received information that Ashish and Sunil earlier had a fight in the day. Besides pelting bricks, some accused also fired at least four gunshots. Police have recovered two bullet shells from the spot and have registered a case against both the accused as well as their aides on charges of attempt to murder, creating ruckus in the area and Arms Act. Police will nab the accused soon,” he added.
