Lucknow: Patients awaiting ear, nose, throat and head-and-neck surgeries at SGPGI may now have shorter waiting times with the institute’s department of head and neck surgery commissioning a new state-of-the-art operation theatre on Friday.The OT, inaugurated by SGPGI director Prof R K Dhiman, has been equipped with the institute’s first robotic 3D digital microscope and a 4K endoscopy system, aimed at improving precision in complex surgeries.The 3D digital microscope combines high-definition three-dimensional visualisation with Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence imaging, giving surgeons enhanced depth perception and a wider field of view during delicate procedures.Unlike conventional microscopes that require surgeons to look through eyepieces, the system displays magnified images on large 3D monitors, allowing the entire surgical team to view the anatomy simultaneously.Head Prof Amit Keshri said the technology would be particularly useful for delicate ear procedures, lateral skull-base surgeries and complex head-and-neck reconstruction.The digital platform is also expected to improve surgical ergonomics by reducing the physical strain associated with prolonged use of conventional microscopes. It will allow resident doctors to observe procedures in real time, strengthening hands-on training and surgical education.The new OT is expected to expand the department’s surgical capacity and reduce the waiting period for patients. Chief medical superintendent Dr Devendra Gupta was the guest of honour at the inauguration.
