Gurgaon: A section of the road in Chandan Nagar near Sector 15 Part 2 caved in recently, prompting authorities to barricade the stretch amid safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians.MCG officials said the collapse occurred above an underground sewer pipeline and is suspected to have been caused by a long-standing leak. Preliminary findings by MCG indicate that wastewater had been seeping into the ground for an extended period, eroding the soil beneath the road and creating a cavity before the surface gave way.The affected stretch has been cordoned off with barricades and caution tape to prevent accidents. The cave-in has narrowed the available carriageway, affecting traffic movement in the area while traffic authorities work on diversion plans.MCG officials said repair work will begin on Tuesday night and will include replacement of the damaged sewer line as well as restoration of the collapsed road surface. The civic body has also informed the traffic department to regulate vehicular movement and implement diversions during the repair work.“We are going to replace the sewerage line. The repair work will start on Tuesday night, and we are hoping to complete it within a few days,” an MCG engineer said.Ward 25 councillor Anup Singh said the affected stretch is part of a road already slated for redevelopment as a model road. “The work order for the project has been awarded at an estimated cost of Rs 8.5 crore. The existing sewer network is also proposed to be replaced. However, the cave-in may not necessarily be linked only to the sewer line alone. Several underground utility networks, including telecom and internet cables, pass through the area. Improper restoration after utility work could also have contributed to the problem. The exact cause will be determined after a detailed technical assessment,” he said. The incident has raised concerns among residents about the condition of ageing underground infrastructure and the absence of mechanisms to detect leaks at an early stage. “This could have resulted in a serious accident. It is not the first cave-in on this stretch. MCG should identify the cause and ensure a permanent solution. This is an important road connecting Sector 14 and MG Road,” said Arun Bansal, a resident of Sector 15 Part 2.
