School staff trained to assess student fitness scientifically

Lucknow: Around 320 coaches, teachers and sports coordinators of schools were trained in scientific fitness assessment methods that use data-driven, standardised and medically recognised protocols to accurately measure a student’s physical health and functional movement, rather than merely evaluating participation in sports. The programme evaluates age-appropriate physical fitness parameters, including movement skills, speed, flexibility, muscular and cardiovascular endurance, core strength and body composition. Students are given individual fitness report cards to help schools and parents monitor their physical development. The training was conducted during a regional workshop organised by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) at La Martiniere College on Saturday. The programme aimed to strengthen the implementation of ACTIVE CISCE, the Council’s flagship physical health and fitness assessment initiative, for the 2026-27 session.Inaugurating the workshop, deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak urged teachers to emphasise the holistic development of students.“Education must go beyond marks and ranks. Our true objective should be to nurture healthy, confident and compassionate individuals through sports, fitness and holistic development, enabling every child to succeed not just in examinations, but in life,” he said.Chief executive and secretary of CISCE, Joseph Emmanuel, said physical fitness should be treated as an integral component of school education rather than an extracurricular activity.Among those present were members of the CISCE executive council, Stephen D’Costa, secretary, ASISC Uttar Pradesh Region, deputy secretary Sudhir Joshi, Arijith Basu and other officials.
