Silchar: The political landscape of the Barak Valley witnessed a tectonic shift on Monday as BJP secured a commanding lead in nine out of the 13 newly-delimited assembly constituencies. The performance marks a significant upswing for the saffron party compared to the 2021 elections, where NDA managed only six seats against the then-opposition alliance’s nine.Trends and final tallies indicate that Congress is struggling to retain its once-formidable dominance in the region, winning in only four seats. Political analysts attribute this decisive momentum to the strategic 2023 delimitation exercise — which reduced the valley’s total seat count from 15 to 13 — and a wave of intense communal polarisation that consolidated the electorate across the three districts of Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi. In Cachar district, the BJP demonstrated near-total dominance, capturing six of the seven constituencies. In the newly renamed Sribhumi district, the BJP clinched two seats. The results in Hailakandi district reflected the valley’s divided mandate. The BJP’s Milon Das won the Hailakandi seat with 1,19,591 votes, defeating Rahul Roy. Conversely, the Algapur-Katlicherra seat saw a massive victory for Congress’ Zubair Anam Mazumder, who secured 1,45,661 votes against AGP’s Zakir Hussain Laskar. As the scale of the victory became clear, jubilant celebrations erupted across Silchar. Saffron-clad party workers took to the streets, dancing to drum beats and smearing each other with gulal. Massive victory processions clogged the main thoroughfares of the town, with supporters waving party flags and distributing sweets.Speaking to supporters during a victory rally, Rajdeep Roy described the result as a “decisive mandate for development.”
