Sawan 2026 is an important month, especially for the devotees of Lord Shiva. This holy month is also known as Shravan. During this period, many people observe fasts, visit Shiva temples, offer Jalabhishek, and follow simple dietary rules.During the Sawan month, many Hindu households do not offer onion, garlic, curd and kadhi. These are observed as part of vrat, purity and seasonal discipline. The goal is to be in a calm mind and a light body during the month of worship.

Why Onion and Garlic Are Avoided in Sawan

Usually, onions and garlic are skipped during religious fasting. These foods are considered tamasic in traditional belief. This can mean that they may increase heaviness, desire, laziness or restlessness in the mind.Devotees try to live a sattvik lifestyle during Sawan. Sattvik food is fresh, simple and light in nature. It is made of fruits, milk, dry fruits, simple vegetables and grains that are good for fasting. This kind of food is believed to be helpful in prayer, chanting mantras and self-control.People who observe Sawan Somwar Vrat do not consume onions and garlic to keep the fast pure. Throughout the Shravan month, many families don’t make these at home.

Why Curd Is Avoided in Shravan

Many people also do not eat curd in the month of Sawan. This has to do with tradition and seasonal health beliefs. Monsoon season is called Sawan. The weather is humid, and digestion may decrease.According to traditional food habits, curd at this time may feel heavy. Some people believe it can increase the risk of colds, coughs, or stomach discomfort in rainy weather. That is the reason why many elders suggest not to take curd at night or on fasting days. But the practices can differ from family to family. Some people do not eat curd at all in Sawan, while others do so on Mondays or vrat days.

Why Kadhi Is Avoided in Sawan

Kadhi is made from Curd and Gram Flour. Many households avoid curd, and hence kadhi, during the Shravan month. As per some traditions, sour foods are minimised during Sawan, as they are thought to break the discipline of fasting. Some people may also find kadhi to be heavy during the rainy season. Devotees like to eat light, easy-to-digest food during the Sawan fast. Therefore, simple sabudana, fruits, milk, makhana and boiled potatoes are more common.
