Margao: GFP president and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has protested Goa legislative assembly complex’s silver jubilee celebrations from Oct 6 to 9. He has refused to attend or accept the felicitation, calling the event a “display of arrogance”.In a letter to speaker Ganesh Gaonkar, Sardesai said govt was “rewriting the history” of the complex. The building was inaugurated by then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on March 5, 2000, and the first session in it began that month. The complex therefore completed 25 years in March 2025, he said, and is now in its 27th year.Sardesai said the “artificial” anniversary was being used to justify expenditure of Rs 5 crore. He demanded public disclosure of the administrative sanction, estimates, tender process, successful bid and all payments. He also sought independent scrutiny of any “inflated expenditure or siphoning of public money”.Citing unemployment, agrarian distress, rising debt, and infrastructure failures, he termed the event “callous governance”. He alleged the present govt’s term had seen curtailed sessions, suppressed opposition voices and bills pushed through with inadequate debate, calling it among the worst in Goa’s legislative history.“The assembly is not a monument to be decorated and celebrated,” wrote Sardesai.
