Varanasi: Around 345 bottles of codeine cough syrup were found in a sack floating in the river Ganga near Chandravati village under the Chaubeypur police station area early Wednesday.Boatmen who pulled the sack out of the river alerted the police after discovering the bottles.Police reached the spot after receiving information, seized the bottles and initiated legal proceedings.DCP (Varuna Zone) Pramod Kumar said an investigation was underway to ascertain how the cough syrup entered the river and identify those involved.He said the concerned drug inspector had also been asked to join the investigation to determine whether the recovered stock was linked to a codeine syrup smuggling racket.The recovery comes as the latest development in the codeine cough syrup racket case. Three cases have already been registered against fugitive kingpin Shubham Jaiswal, who remains absconding.
