Dibrugarh: A prolonged protest by residents over the decision to permanently close an unmanned railway level crossing linking Na-Ali Habichuk and the Jorhat Medical College ended on Tuesday after railway authorities assured locals that they would construct a railway under bridge (RUB) beneath the tracks to restore a safe crossing.Locals repeatedly protested over the past six months after the railway department ordered a complete closure of the unmanned crossing. The crossing is regularly used by hundreds of people from several nearby villages, including students, patients and daily commuters, who said the shutdown will disrupt daily life and access to essential services.The protest on Tuesday drew the attention of newly elected Titabor MLA Dhiraj Gowala, who visited the site to assess the situation and meet with residents. Gowala inspected the crossing, listened to grievances and held discussions with senior railway officials and the executive engineer of the public works department (PWD).“I have spoken to the district commissioner and the railway authorities. They have assured us that a RUB will be constructed to provide a permanent and safe solution for the people. This crossing is vital for students and patients who travel daily to Jorhat Medical College and other institutions. We will ensure the project is expedited,” Gowala said.The MLA said he would follow up with the district administration and railway officials until the RUB construction begins.Residents welcomed the assurance but urged prompt action and a clear timeline.“We are happy with the decision and want to see the RUB constructed as early as possible,” a local said.Railway officials said technical and feasibility assessments would begin soon and that coordination with the PWD and district administration has been initiated.“The decision to close the unmanned crossing was taken in the interest of public safety. However, we understand the hardship it causes and will work towards constructing a RUB as a long-term solution,” an official said.
