Varanasi The UP govt has approved Rs 64 crore for the construction of the Varanasi Police Commissionerate headquarters, which is likely to come up on the Traffic Lines campus and be completed during 2027-28.Talking to TOI on Sunday, commissioner of police Mohit Agrawal said the budget for the Commissionerate headquarters building had been sanctioned by the state government. The proposed building will be constructed by the public works department (PWD), he said, adding that the tender process is underway. Construction will begin immediately after the contract is awarded, with a target of 11 months for completion.Giving details of the proposed headquarters, Agrawal said the building will house the Commissioner of Police’s office, ACP courts, and dedicated arrangements for public hearings. A waiting hall, canteen and other public facilities will also be provided. The building will accommodate the offices of the traffic police and other commissionerate departments on different floors and will include stilt parking.Earlier, the police commissioner visited the Police Lines along with senior officials to inspect sites where new buildings and infrastructure projects are under construction. During the visit, he inspected the land earmarked for the new headquarters at Traffic Lines and directed officials to clear the site at the earliest.Agrawal said the government has also sanctioned Rs 34 crore for the construction of 32 residential units for gazetted officers, a six-room transit hostel for officers deployed on VIP duty and Type-II quarters for sub-inspectors. Around 70 per cent of the work on these projects has already been completed.He added that construction of a Rs 1.5-crore meeting hall, barracks for 100 personnel, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 500 personnel for briefings and renovation of the badminton court are also underway at the Police Lines.The police commissioner further directed officials to undertake conservation and beautification of the existing waterbody, install floodlights at the cricket ground and establish an automatic roti-making plant in the police mess.During the inspection, special emphasis was laid on cleanliness, discipline, maintenance and efficient management of resources. After finding poor sanitation in the Radio Branch premises, Agrawal warned the officer concerned and directed immediate cleaning while ensuring regular upkeep in future. Instructions were also issued to install streetlights along internal roads and other important locations within the Police Lines campus.After reviewing facilities at the Children’s Park, Parade Ground, Adarsh Barracks and RO plant, the police commissioner directed officials to ensure regular maintenance. He stressed adherence to quality standards, safety norms and timely completion of all ongoing construction works.DCP Police Lines Pramod Kumar, ADCP Vaibhav Bangar and other senior officers were present during the inspection.
