Jaipur: Rajasthan recorded a decline in road accidents for the first time in five years in 2025, but fatalities climbed to a five-year high, with 12,069 people killed on the state’s roads, according to data tabled in the Assembly.Replying to a question by Chhabra MLA Pratap Singh Singhvi, the state govt said 23,820 road accidents were reported in 2025, down from 24,838 in 2024 — a decline of about 4.1%. However, road deaths increased from 11,790 to 12,069, while the number of injured fell marginally from 22,927 to 22,519.The five-year trend shows accidents rose steadily from 20,951 in 2021 to 23,614 in 2022, 24,705 in 2023 and 24,838 in 2024 before declining in 2025. Fatalities, however, increased every year, rising from 10,043 in 2021 to 11,104 in 2022, 11,762 in 2023, 11,790 in 2024 and 12,069 in 2025.Road safety experts said the data indicates that while enforcement may be reducing the number of crashes, those occurring are becoming more severe.“We are reducing the number of crashes, but not their severity. Every fatal accident is usually the result of multiple failures—road engineering, speeding, enforcement, and emergency response. Unless all these improve together, deaths will continue to rise,” said B L Swami, former head of the civil engineering department at MNIT Jaipur and former national highways auditor with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.Referring to the recent Jaipur-Ajmer highway tragedy, Swami said over-speeding, unsafe roadside conditions and inadequate protective infrastructure often turn survivable crashes into fatal ones. “Rajasthan now needs regular road safety audits, black-spot rectification and stronger trauma care, not just stricter enforcement,” he said.The govt attributed the fall in accidents to stricter enforcement, expanded highway patrols, speed cameras, Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS), and awareness campaigns. It informed the House that over 28 lakh e-challans were issued in 2025, while scientific investigations are now being conducted in crashes involving three or more deaths to identify engineering and enforcement gaps.
