Riot victims’ kin block Madhya Marg

Chandigarh: Family members of victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots staged a dharna and blocked Madhya Marg in Sector 26 on Tuesday, demanding a meeting with Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann. The protest disrupted traffic on the busy stretch, leading to long queues of vehicles. As the chief minister’s convoy was scheduled to pass through the route from the airport to his residence, police diverted it through an alternative route as a security measure. Sector 26 SHO Ram Ratan Sharma and other police personnel reached the spot and held talks with the protesters, who said their repeated attempts to secure an appointment with the CM had failed. They insisted on continuing the dharna until assured of a meeting. The protest ended after police assured them that a meeting with the chief minister would be arranged at 10 am on Wednesday. The families said they wanted to discuss pending riot-related cases, rehabilitation issues and other long-standing demands.
