Gurgaon: Residents of Sector 23A Saturday disrupted waste dumping at a vacant residential site for nearly two hours, protesting against the accumulation of garbage at the site for more than 24 hours. The site has been used for temporary waste dumping since Sept 11, after Carterpuri secondary waste collection point was taken up for renovation.Residents said that MCG had earlier assured residents that waste would be lifted simultaneously from the site and that the arrangement would continue for only two weeks. They said the two-week period had already ended. A few residents formed a human chain at the site on Saturday to prevent garbage-laden vehicles from dumping more waste. The residents said they were concerned about the accumulation of waste in the residential area and questioned the continuation of the temporary arrangement without timely clearance. The protest was called off after an MCG sanitation inspector assured the residents that the accumulated waste would be lifted from the site. Following the assurance, waste dumping operations resumed.The development comes days after residents had opposed the use of the vacant HSVP plot in Sector 23A for garbage dumping. MCG had said the diversion was necessitated by renovation work at Carterpuri secondary waste collection point.“MCG had sought two weeks of time to divert waste here since the secondary waste collection centre at Carterpuri is being renovated. That deadline got over on Friday. Moreover, we were assured that waste will be lifted simultaneously as day and night operations of dumpers will be done so that waste does not accumulate at the site. However, it has been more than 24 hours that waste was not cleared. So, we formed a human chain and stopped dumping till we were not given the assurance that it will be lifted,” said Bhawani Shankar Tripathy, a resident of Sector 23A.However, an MCG official privy to the matter refuted the claims and said, “Waste is being regularly cleared from the site. Moreover, the fresh waste dumped at the site today (Saturday) will be cleared by tonight.”
