Surat: A third-year resident doctor at Govt Medical College (GMC), Surat, allegedly died by suicide on Thursday by inflicting injuries to his wrist and hands.The deceased was identified as Yogen Dilip Prajapati (30), a resident doctor in the anatomy department who was pursuing his postgraduate degree and was due to complete his specialisation in anatomy this year.The reason for the drastic step was not known immediately.According to police and hospital sources, Prajapati allegedly inflicted cuts to his wrists and hands in the dissection room shortly after a practical examination for first-year MBBS students. Sources said he walked around in the hall for a while after injuring himself, causing acute blood loss, which ultimately turned fatal.Originally from Bhavnagar, Prajapati had been living in Gandhinagar for many years. His father was expected to reach Surat late at night.Parul Vadgama, superintendent of Surat Civil Hospital, told TOI, “Dr Prajapati was brought to the emergency ward at around 4.30pm. However, he had already died by the time he reached the emergency facility. Doctors found cuts on his body and there had been substantial blood loss. He was living with his wife and four-month-old child on the college campus.”Jayesh Brahmbhatt, dean of GMC, said the college had sought a report from the head of the anatomy department to ascertain whether Prajapati had been facing any issues.“There was a practical examination for first-year MBBS students on Wednesday morning. The examination ended around 2.15pm, after which he might have entered the room and taken the unfortunate step. We are investigating whether he had any complaints or issues with anyone or anything,” he said.Khatodara police reached the spot after college authorities informed them about the incident.DCP Zone-4 Nidhi Thakur said police were recording statements of college staff, students and family members to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.“We have launched an investigation and are in the process of recording statements of various persons from the college as well as his family members. We are trying to ascertain the reason behind the incident. Prima facie, we have found cuts on his body,” she said.
