Guwahati: The Northeast Minorities Students Union (Nemsu) protested at Chachal on Monday, demanding rehabilitation of those displaced during eviction drives and justice for Zubeen Garg. The union sought rehabilitation for people displaced by state eviction drives and the Sivasagar floods, alleging that many continue to face hardships without adequate support. It also demanded justice in singer Zubeen Garg’s death and the 2017 killing of student activist Lafiqul Islam Ahmed in Kokrajhar. Protesters questioned the progress of both cases and sought transparent investigations and action against those responsible.“Why has justice not been delivered in Islam’s case? We want Assam govt and the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) members to clarify the situation. We want justice for Laffiqul Islam and Zubeen Garg. The govt must ensure that the investigations are carried out properly and that justice is delivered,” a protester said. The protesters criticised CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that accused persons were being granted bail despite his statements on strict action against criminal activity. They said this raised questions about govt’s accountability. The union said its agitation would continue until its demands were addressed and opposed any move it considered harmful to the interests of the Assamese people.
