Refrigerator seized after recreation of crime scene in Riya murder case

Guwahati: Police on Wednesday seized the refrigerator in which Ramanuj Goswami had kept his wife’s severed head after killing her with a machete on Sept 3. The seizure was carried out in the presence of a magistrate, following a recreation of the crime scene at the couple’s flat at Basisthapur in Beltola.According to police, Ramanuj had beheaded his wife Riya Talukdar Goswami following an argument over her alleged extramarital affair. He surrendered before police on Sept 6 and is currently in seven-day police custody.A police team took Ramanuj to the flat on Wednesday evening and recorded the proceedings while recreating the crime scene. The team searched the flat and seized the refrigerator.Police had earlier seized the machete, allegedly used by Ramanuj in the crime, and several liquor bottles from the flat on Monday. On Wednesday morning, a medical examination of Ramanuj was conducted, including an HIV test, after the owner of a now-closed rehabilitation centre claimed that he had tested positive for HIV and had undergone treatment there several times over the past five years.A senior police officer said, “The claim made by somebody about the accused being HIV-positive is, however, separate from the crime. However, his medical examination has been conducted as per procedure.”Ramanuj, a cab driver, had married Riya on Sept 22 last year.On Tuesday, while being taken for a medical examination, Ramanuj told mediapersons, “I have no regret and no apology for whatever I did. I’ve eliminated my wife, and the moment I am out of jail, her sugar daddy is next.”However, he did not clarify who he was referring to as ‘sugar daddy’.Police said they were investigating all aspects of the case, including allegations of drug addiction. In a similar case in 2023, Bandana Kalita allegedly killed her husband and mother-in-law in Guwahati, cut them into pieces and disposed of them in the jungles of Meghalaya.
