Raised RCCs, clogged drains leave Shalimar Garden pockets flooded
Many streets suffer from a “reverse slope” issue, causing rainwater to flow back home instead of being drained away from them

Ghaziabad: Residents of ward number 78 in Shalimar Garden Extension-1 have demanded immediate intervention from the urban development department following persistent waterlogging issues in the area. Himsagar Enclave and Radha Krishna Park are among the worst-affected locations.Residents attribute the ongoing waterlogging challenges to inadequate drainage systems and improperly constructed RCC (reinforced cement concrete) roads that have been raised too high to allow efficient water runoff.Areas that have seen recent road construction lack proper drainage, while existing streets suffer from a “reverse slope” issue, causing rainwater to flow back toward homes instead of being drained away. “The absence of adequate outlets for rainwater has led to frequent waterlogging after every rain,” stated Pradeep Gupta, a senior citizen and social activist from the area.

Another contributing factor to the ongoing problems in Himsagar Enclave is the lack of routine maintenance for the large drain that runs through Shalimar Garden

Another contributing factor to the ongoing problems in Himsagar Enclave is the lack of routine maintenance for the large drain that runs through Shalimar Garden. Gupta pointed to failures in regular desilting efforts, which complicate drainage and exacerbate the waterlogging situation.“Local authorities and residents alike are well aware of these challenges, yet the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has yet to provide a permanent solution. We are continuously facing the same issues every monsoon season,” he said. “It is crucial that the authorities conduct a technical inspection of the site to investigate the slopes of roads and drains and address the obstructions to drainage.”Residents have called for immediate action from govt, emphasising that adequate drainage systems will alleviate their suffering during the monsoon. They have written to the urban development department, Uttar Pradesh govt and also marked a copy of the letter to the chief minister, urging steps to ensure a more resilient and liveable environment for the residents of Shalimar Garden Extension-1.Further response from the authorities is awaited on the matter.
